If you’re considering putting your home on the market this summer, your head may already be spinning at the mere thought of getting it ready for sale. But there’s no need to be overwhelmed, considering you can start now with a series of small, yet powerful, steps guaranteed to make the end goal easier to realize. We’re talking about spring-cleaning, and even if you’ve no intention of selling your home anytime soon, you’ll surely benefit from these tips.
1. Purge your clutter
Always our favorite task with which to begin a solid spring-cleaning, getting rid of superfluous belongings will prove a satisfying experience in more ways than one. Make a list of rooms in your home, and go one by one, removing things you don’t use or need. Bonus: it’s never been easier to go about this step in an earth-friendly fashion. Stacks of old paperwork is easily recycled, as are old clunky electronics. When cleaning out closets, separate apparel into two groups: one for resale and one for donation. For everything else, why not hold a garage sale?
2. Clean your windows
The easiest way to go about this step, of course, is to hire a window cleaning team to come out and do the job professionally. (Your First Team Real Estate agent will be able to refer you to a trusted company for this one.) However, you can also DIY it. Start from the inside of your home, and then repeat on the outside for the full effect.
3. Paint something
No, it’s not technically cleaning, but a single gallon of paint can go quite a long way to freshen up a door, a powder room, baseboards/moulding … you name it! Furthermore, a pop of color can breathe new life into a lackluster space.
4. Wash your light fixtures
If you’re like most of us, the only time a light fixture gets taken apart and cleaned is when a light bulb goes out. The truth is, these things collect dust, and cleaning all of them in one fell swoop will have an instant effect. It’s not a fun task, but it is a necessary one.
5. Freshen up your flooring
Whether it’s carpet, hard wood, tile or travertine, it will look and feel infinitely better once you give it some love. For post-cleaning maintenance, make your entire home a no-shoes zone.
